Tales of Europe
(An excerpt from a Haagen-Daz store in Munich while chatting with the girl working at the counter)
Me: So where did you learn to speak American so well?
Girl: Ummm…
Mike: You are so fired.
So I spent a bit more than a week travelling with a couple (and by a couple, I mean 4 engineers) of friends, all instigated by Mr. Michael Lu. The itinerary? 8 days, Vienna to Innsbruck to Munich to Budapest, and back home. How did I get on this trip? Well, let’s just say cheap airfare, the day before christmas, a phone call, and a bit of the green and red genies.
Vienna
So, we floated into the airport here after a 9 hour flight from Seattle->Copenhagen with a 2 hour leg from CPH to Vienna(Wien). I gotta say, I love the service on SAS, nonstop movies the whole flight, and convenient handholds on the plane make it easy for folks like me to climb over sleeping folks on the plane. On the whole, I think we spent a total of 1 day in Vienna, if you count sleeping. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a wonderfully old city, and the short time we spent in the St. Stephen’s cathedral was nice, but I think I was overall excited to hop the train the next day to ski in the austrian alps, also known as tirol.
Innsbruck - College Ski Town Austrian style
Wow. So, I half expected this tiny little ski town with a bunch of expensive hotels and 8 or 9 restaurants, you know, a glorified Whistler Village. Innsbruck is really a city, with a tram system, and a university with 26,000 students. You pretty quickly notice this while downing beers and doing shots of dooley’s (oh yes, toffee and vodka, like bailey’s but sweeter and stronger).I have never seen so much powder in my life. Mike got buried in a tree, and I did a face plant and buried myself up to my waste, on a serious mogul slope. And who’s to complain at 25 euros for a lift ticket at Axamer Lizum? http://www.skiingaustria.co.uk/austria/tirol/austrian-ski-resort/axamer-lizum.html
They’ve got these crazy trams that look like giant worms that carry you all the way up the slope. When you’re tired of skiing the powderfull hills and entertaining yourself with the european ski fashion. Half of the beanies they have come with green highlighted hair so you can look like derek zoolander while you go down the slopes. Did I mention that Axamer Lizum is one of 12 ski resorts a half hour ride from Innsbruck? Booh yeah, I will go back.
